Jordin Sparks was born in Phoenix, Arizona on December 22, 1989 and was living in Glendale, AZ at the time she started on American Idol. Her father, Phillippi Sparks played defensive back for the New York Giants, and Jordin has been singing all her life, being named Best Young Artist in Arizona three times.
Prior to Idol, Sparks won various singing contests such as Coca-Cola’s Rising Star, the Gospel Music Association Academy’s Overall Spotlight Award, America’s Most Talented Kids, Colgate Country Showdown to name a few. She had also sung the national anthem at various professional sporting events, so she was a natural and experienced performer even before the show. She auditioned twice for the show before earning her gold ticket that would eventually lead to her being named the sixth member of the American Idol Winners List.

Jordin auditioned for Season 6 of American Idol on two separate occasions. The first time in Los Angeles she failed to make it past the first round.
